Runner Spotlight, Let Me Introduce Kristen

Today is Spotlight Thursday

This week I'd like to introduce Kristen.
I asked Kristen several questions, to tell part of her story and introduce you all to her

Tell us what distances you like to run.

Through the work week I typically like a 2-3 mile quickie! On the weekend there is nothing better then a 5 miler and sometimes longer!

How long have you been running? Or when did you start running?

I started running the summer after I graduated with my bachelors degree (2007) My sister always ran in the Baltimore Running Festival so I signed up for the 5k and I was hooked after that!

What has been your favorite race and distance you have ever run? Tell us why?

My favorite race distance is a 10 miler! It is long enough that you have to train, but does not feel as difficult as a half. Those 3 short miles typically make or break me!

If you could run any race in the entire world, where would it be and why would you pick it?

The Krispy Kreme Challenge Run in Raleigh, NC. It is a 2.5 mile run to the local Krispy Kreme, you eat a DOZEN donuts, then run back 2.5 miles. I just think it would be so much fun and who doesn't LOVE donuts?!

Do you enjoy running in the spring, summer, fall or winter the best?

Fall! I live in a coastal town and the fall is something magical here. The temps are usually perfect and the scenery is just amazing!

Have you experienced any trials/injuries/health issues that you have had to overcome? Tell us about them.

Nothing major besides my 2 pregnancies in the past 2 years. I stayed very active through both and even ran the Nike Women's Half while I was 29 weeks pregnant! I had C-sections with both and I was able to get right back into running/working out by 2 weeks PP. I contribute my working out while pregnant part of the reason I was able to recover so quickly!

Tell me what goes through your mind when you cross a finish line?

Complete relief! I am so happy to be finished and proud of myself for finishing- no matter the distance or the time!

Do you have a specific distance and PR that you are proud of? Tell us about it.

I ran the Annapolis Half two years ago and it took me 2:34 (I was about 15-18 weeks pregnant) and then I ran it again this year and finished in 2:14 (5 months PP) I trained hard and really put the work in to try and get faster and I sure did! It was awesome!

Do you have a funny running story to share? or funny experience while running?

When registering for the Annapolis half I took advantage of the packet being mailed to you. When I received mine I opened it and saw I was awarded the bib number 666. I tried to not let it get to me but the night before the race I was picking up last minute items at the local CVS and my total came to 6.66! I took the mark of the beast and decided I would just "beast" the race and sure enough I did, setting a PR!

Have you run races in any other countries before?

Not yet!

What is your favorite kind of running, solo running or running with a friend or group?

Either alone so I can truly escape or with a friend. I have found I like my alone time but also enjoy the support and motivation of having a running friend next to me especially during a race!

Do you listen to music while you run? Give us the top 2 running songs on your playlist.

ALWAYS! Top two songs have to be: "Million Voices" by Otto Knows and "Party in the USA" by Miley. I love Miley- she never gets old to me!

What is your must have running gadget, or item?

iphone- tracks my workout and provides music!!!

In your spare time What other hobbies or sports do you love do?

hobbies include: cooking, beach time, my kids!
I love football- I host a Monday Night Running Challenge on my blog and have season tickets to the Baltimore Ravens! Just cannot get enough football my friends!

What type of things motivate you and push you towards success in life?

My children! They are still very little but they make me want to be the best person I can possibly be!

Do you have any tips of suggestions for someone who is thinking of starting up running?

Just go out there and do it. Pick a goal race and have fun with it! Running should not be work so do not let it turn into that!

Any New Years goals you have set for 2014?

Move more (hoping for at least 600 running and 200 miles walking), Give back to the community and Pray for others!

You have a beautiful cat, what is his/her name?

That is Dewey! He is a rescue from our local SPCA- I adopted him and his sister Lizzy to be the mouse hunters of the farm house I used to live in!

What are a few of your dreams or bucket list items?

Run 1 marathon!

Tell us something unique about you.

Our first baby (Reagan) was born on my 1st wedding anniversary!

  2. I'm so happy to hear about your pregnancy/running stories! With my son, I gained too much weight and didn't exercise at all while pregnant. I hope to have at least one more child, but next time I'm pregnant, I want to do it "right"...exercise, run, and maintain a healthy weight!

  3. I love hearing that you ran while you were pregnant. That's amazingly awesome. I wasn't active when I was pregnant, next time I get preggers, I know I want to keep running.
